Plane Crash

This post is a far stretch from a wedding or engagement post, but definitely falls into the category of personal. So two days ago on Sunday I was sitting in my living room, trying to get started on my laptop on editing some images. I got a text from a friend that said a plane had crashed near my house. Immediately my first responder instincts kicked in, which then switched just a fast to my photojournalist instincts. I, of course, was concerned for the victims and began praying for them as I walked out of my house, camera in hand. Please note: I would not dare post an entry like this if the victims weren't going to be okay!

As many of you know, I live in the country on 14 acres about 20 minutes from my downtown studio office. We are far enough out to not get cable TV (which is good AND bad :). Anyway, I began to scout my property for a plane, thinkin' it was really close. As I began to get in my car I saw the entire calvary of 2 fire engines, 1 ambulance, 3 CHP, the Sheriff's office and a bunch more zip by my 1/4 mile driveway. I was right behind them!

The hard part was locating the aircraft. For about 30 minutes "we" couldn't find the crash site, but thankfully CalStar (emergency helicopters) were able to locate the victims and fly them to the hospital. But we still couldn't find the site. As it turns out, it had crashed in to the Salinas River which runs about half a mile from my house. The actual location though was in the river about three miles from my house, across all of the famous Salinas Valley fields. Of course, to present an even greater challenge, we've had a lot of rain lately and all of that great dirt for growing things becomes a beautiful, sticky mud...at least on the farm roads. Emergency vehicles were faced with their challenges, and I was faced with a decision: How badly do I want to photograph this, especially first on scene? So I began to walk.

Little did I know what distance 3 miles could be in the mud! I asked myself several times Why am I doing this? I like to finish what I start, and I'm stubborn, so I continued. Anyway, for a good part of the trip I was running...why, I don't know. But still. It felt good in theory.

So alas, the images. They were featured on 2 news channels. For those that say God doesn't exist, consider this: Both men are still alive! Pretty awesome. Keep 'em in your prayers for sure. I'm reminded that you never know, so cherish every moment with your loved ones!

Idaho Fun

Before our trip to Vegas for the big photographer convention this weekend, I wanted to catch up a little and post some shots from Meaghan's lifestyle shoot up in Idaho. It was a blustery cold day, but Meaghan jumped on out there and had some fun. My desire is that each photo session I do be an opportunity for a fantastic experience chocked full of good times & memories, whether it be a high end wedding or a lifestyle session, cold or warm...

She even changed into a summer dress and got in a field with some snow on the ground...in flip flops. That's my kind of fun, but obviously presents a challenge. It got real chilly when that sun started going down...And with the 20 somethin' degrees biting at us, the creativity time quickly began to dwindle. :) The envisioned shoot will definitely be captured this spring/summer for sure! Can you say, warmer? We had a blast, and I look forward to shooting more with Meaghan later this year!

Well friends, my gutt was right. :) The forecast for 2009 does not include a vision of this dude taking 17,000 pictures of a little beautiful daughter. Which means, the being inside my wife's belly is indeed another BOY!!!! Thanks for sharing in our delight! We are stoked, and the truth is no matter what the sex we've been jazzed to have a healthy baby, with all fingers and toes in their perspective place. I was trying to hold off so I can show a cool untrasound picture but my wonderful bride has the images with her and not at the studio. Oh well, I'm sure you guys can figure it out though. Thanks again! I am honored that you all care so much.

I figured it's been a while since I've posted images of my favorite little man in the world JK, so it's time. He was a bit onry (how do you spell that?) on this afternoon because he just got his haircut, but he's freakin' cute nonetheless. The last image was from one of our daddy days (every wednesday!) at Starbucks. I've already been hounded about how my boy is a bit young for Starbucks, but with the $1 kids "hot chalk-lit" you can't trade the time together for anything. A quick question: with the hussle-bussle of life and the weight that it has on our shoulders, when do YOU take the time to just sit and enjoy the hot chocolates? Believe me, I'm not the hippy type per se, and I'm feeling the pressures of the economy too, especially with a new baby almost here, but the deeper part of life should not be ignored or put on the backburner. Take time to adjust your daily life and make those wise investments. Despite short term pains, you'll be glad you made those Long Term investments for sure. Happy Thursday!

Over the holidays I was stoked to photograph Meaghan in Boise, Idaho. Meaghan is an up and coming model, and is such a kick to be around! And oh yeah, check out that natural red hair! I have a bunch of shots to post next week, but here's a quickie. I'm just about out the door for one of the select bridal shows that we do each year. Here it is folks...Dan & Taylor's wedding slideshow. The ceremony and reception were held at Chaminade in Santa Cruz, but what made this such a special wedding was the absolute love they each had for each other. It's a pure joy to capture real love, and I am blessed to know this couple now as friends! They had the violinist learn how to play "This I Promise You" by 'N Sync, so it's only a fitting song... :) I'm looking forward to their "Day After" bridal session...it's gonna be fun!

Hello my friends! You might find this a funny blog post, but I sit here bored with a swollen cheek. I've finally gone through with it. Since last April I've rescheduled the extraction of my wisdom teeth about 6 times, but yesterday I bit the bullet (haha no pun intended) and got three out of four yanked. Let me tell ya, the being put to sleep was kind of cool yet scary...but the day after is the big doosy. Check out the following iPhone pic...The bottom right is the worst! To those of you who have gotten this done, I now know your pain. Overall though, it's not as bad as I imagined. But it still stinks.

WEEK 13!

Okay, so as y'all know, my gorgeous bride is pregnant with our second child, and is thankfully just about out of the first trimester! When we were pregnant with Judah I did not have a blog, but made a chintzy website (which is now gone) to keep our family and friends updated. But the times are a changin, and I'll be posting the updates here! So, to kick things off, here's a little status update (courtesy of AmericanBaby.com). We don't know if it's a boy or girl yet, but I'll refer to him as a boy...for now. :)

Our little baby now weighs about 1/2 ounce and is between 2.5 and 3 inches in length. His digestive tract continues to develop as tiny villi (hairs) form inside the intestines. These villi will help move food through it's digestive tract. The pancreas has begun producing insulin, and all 20 teeth buds have formed inside his mouth. But of course, the teeth aren't visible yet.
At the end of this week, our baby officially enters the second trimester of development. His eyes have moved from the sides of his head (Weird!) to the front, and his ears are in their normal position. He's also got reflexes--if you prod him, he'll squirm (although Gina still won't feel it), and his hands and feet respond to stimuli by closing or clenching.
The ultrasound pics...coming as soon as my scanner is fixed. :)

These two have been through a lot together, and it was a pure joy getting to know them on a personal level. Habits...hmm. What comes to mind is trying to break bad ones, though
trying to establish good ones is the other half of the battle. Take
for example blog posting. (Sigh). I am constantly thinking of a great
blog post and then, when I actually could post, I get sidetracked with
work or family. I know that your time is valuable, and I want to make
the best of it for sure. To you who follow me, I sincerely thank you
and am super eager to share a whole bunch of stuff with you. I have
pictures from several weddings now released, a cd cover shoot, senior
portraits, and more! Thanks so much for hanging with me and I'm
excited for some new changes happening...and new blog posting habits! :)

Alrighty folks, here it is. The good news that's been keeping us a little busier than usual and percolating for a while now will continue to percolate. What I mean is this: The Steelman Family of 3 will soon be the "Steelman Four"! Can you believe it? Yes, we are pregnant!! (Well, Gina has to do the hard part, but still). She's about 2 months along, and we're uber excited to welcome a new addition to our lives next May. I don't think that Jk has fully realized that he's going to be a big brother, but dang can he act! Check out the picture I put together of him below, and be sure to click on it to make it bigger. He's such a rad kid. I can't imagine how cool things are gonna be with another. Wheee! :-)When Gina was pregnant with Judah Kai, we made a website to keep our friends and family posted, and I actually got really involved with knowing the latest developments like fingernails growing, heart beating, lungs developing, etc. How exciting! This time around, we're gonna post it all here on the Tangents Blog, so please keep coming back and watch how obsessed I become with the progress. It truly is an amazing thing, this thing called LIFE. Thanks for letting me share my joy with you!

The Great Outdoors

Hiya folks! I took the weekend off two weekends ago for a family camping trip with dear friends of ours at Henry Cowell State Park in the Santa Cruz mountains. We figured we'd better go before it gets too cold this year. Gina, Jk, and I showed up last as the last minute to-do's pushed us way back into the evening, but we managed to get the tent up in the dark after some struggles. :-) But there's a very important fact I feel you must know: If we go camping, we go CAMPING. Nathan & Dawn and Sam & Ashleigh had some very cute little tents to keep snuggled in, but a couple of years ago we purchased the Steelman Family Tent, aka "The Ritz in the Woods". Man, did I forget the size of this baby! Our tent sleeps like a zillion people, has a ping pong table, pool, and an espresso machine! Hahaha, okay, so it's just big. I didn't really get a picture of the whole thing, but you can see that Jk found the doggy door, or whatever it was. He loved his own little entrance! Isn't he so freaking cute??We had a blast, despite the campground being under a red flag warning which means NO CAMPFIRE! (Can you believe that? Camping with no fire? augh.) My friends decided to do a very small fire for the girls and smores, because really, what is camping without any smores? Come to find out, if we would have been caught, the fine would have been around $600! (Can you see me smiling right now?)

After packin' up camp, we went down to the Roaring Railroads and snapped a few fun pictures. NOTE: THERE WAS NO IMMINENT DANGER WHEN CHILD WAS ON TRACKS! Just thought I'd let you know, just in case. Haha. Next time we're going on the train ride for sure. They had some type of harvest festival going on, where the kids could make scarecrows, fun silly hats, and what not. We ended this fun excursion with a tailgate party - Yes, we tailgated in the public parking lot with chairs and all, and devoured some mean delicious sandwiches and beverages made from grain, wheat, water etc...
It's a good thing to balance family time for sure, because at the end of the day, what is it that really matters? Who are you going to impress the most? Get out there and go camping. Or something else...and have fun!!

Yes folks, it's true...I am blogging! I seem to be in a cat and mouse game with the time monster, but I am on top of it today. I kid around saying that I need a personal assistant, but there is so much truth in it. Please don't get me wrong, my wife is one heck of a supermom, superwife, amazing, wonderous spectacular woman indeed, and a fantastic assistant in life, but I don't want to overload her or anything. :) haha.

Anyway, back on track, in the attempt to post recent photographs, here is a senior portrait session I did for Jessica. She's the daughter of one of my early-on wedding clients and now dear friends. I love it when it comes full circle. To be the family's photographer is such a title that I do not take for granted. I've said it before and I'll say it again, what an honor. Go ahead, check 'em out.

Happy Friday to you! Last weekend I got the privilege to photograph Taylor & Dan's wedding at Chaminade in Santa Cruz, and am excited to share some images with you...more to come, but here's a sneak peak! I'm taking the weekend off to go camping with my family, and am stoked to be able to spend time with them. We're going somewhere in the Santa Cruz mountains, and may or may not get cell reception. I'm ba-aack! Okay everyone, the long lost blogger has returned from lala land trying to catch up! :) I had the privilege of photographing Taylor & Dan's engagement last weekend, just in time for their wedding this coming Saturday. These two are so cute together...The connection between them is amazing, and it's a pleasure to capture those special moments! We met earlier this year, and I can't beieve how fast time has flown by. I'm really looking forward to their wedding at Chaminade in Santa Cruz, and also a creative bridal session after. For now, check out some of their beauty together...

These shots were taken in Monterey and shot on the cooler side to grasp the raw feeling of the rustic walls and such, yet warm enough to accentuate the lovebirds. Hope you enjoyed!

To my faithful and awesome blogaholics: THANK YOU for following me! Last week I was out of town at Pictage's PartnerCon conference and a quick trip to San Diego, and am back in town trying to put together a new and improved office studio. We moved spaces, and as many of you can attest, moving sucks. But, the ultimate outcome is wonderful! (or will be). I can't wait to share new pics when we are done, so just hang on there. First things first: A beautiful wedding in Pebble Beach this weekend followed by Senior Portraits...and then back to creating the experience at the MSP studio.

I do try to post an image here and there (haha), so here is a funny shot of my fantastic son JK. Yeah, it's a little weird, but we all have weird sides, right? :)

Christine's Senior Portraits

Here is Christine, one of our awesome family friends and fantastic babysitter. She is graduating this year, and honored me with the opportunity to photograph her senior portraits. She wanted something traditional, yet not quite the same as every one else. Our approach was quite simple, really. Let's leave my studio and take a walk around several blocks here in downtown Monterey...and see what we come up with! We had fun, and her mom did too. It was refreshing for her mom to see us in action, a far cry from the traditional studio portraiture and posing. I really like to do my best to capture the essence of my clients, and not make them look like something that they're not. That's my style. Real. :)

I'm off to Los Angeles first thing tomorrow morning for a photographer conference with my partnered photo lab Pictage and will be gone for nearly a week. I'm also going down to San Diego to see some friends and make some new ones. All of this on my motorcycle...how am I going to transport my dry cleaned shirts? haha... I wish you all a great week, and look forward to random blog posts from my iphone. (I won't have my computer, but I'll survive I think.)

Routines Stink Sometimes...

I've been having posting issues on this blog & I'm trying to figure out why my postings haven't shown up, so thanks for your patience! Last week my family and I rented a surrey bike to ride down the bike path here in Monterey before going to dinner. It's always refreshing to do things out of the normal "routine" that we get stuck in. Check out this little dude!

Here is my family, minus yours truly (hey! someone has to take the pictures on the iphone :) And yes, our dog is in the basket with our delightful son.

One of the things in life that I think everyone experiences at least once or twice or daily :) is losing something of value, and then crawling around on your hands and knees both physically and mentally searching with a fine-toothed comb for it. "It" can be a set of keys, your wallet, purse, $100 bill, a checkbook, glasses, a special note, a phone number, your iphone, or something that's worth so much more. For the last 3 weeks mine has been my Vmoda Headphones. I know, it sounds so silly to blog about this. But since Spirit West Coast I have not been able to find these expensive headphones, and I hate to lose things. I mean, overall, with all of the little gadgets I have and all of the busy-ness going on with that event, and the post production I'm in the middle of with weddings, etc, I've done pretty well with not losing anything. But it still stinks when I let one fall through the cracks. It just happens, ya know?

Well, anyways, (figure out yet why my blog is called "Tangents"?), I tore apart both my car and truck multiple times, determined to find these bad boys. At least if they fell out of my pocket, I was hoping that someone who found them would actually be able to use them and enjoy them. Maybe someone who needed them more than me? (Oh my...Mike, they're headphones!) The point I'm desperately trying to get to here is that the utter and complete satisfaction of finding something you search for so long is overwhelming! Yes, I found them! Yayayay! On the floorboard of my truck almost under the pedals.They're in a small black pouch, okay? geesh!)

So, not to completely disappoint you with wasting your time about headphones, there really is a moral to this entry. It's found in the parable of the lost coin in that crazy great book called the bible. It affirms a fact that is so much more important than some stupid earphones...it's that Life is so much more than getting caught up in the little things in life, and that there is a fulfilling life to be lived (once people stop and think about it a little). The short but powerful verses: "Or suppose a woman has ten silver coins and loses one. Does she not light a lamp, sweep the house and search carefully until she finds it? And when she finds it, she calls her friends and neighbors together and says, 'Rejoice with me; I have found my lost coin.' In the same way, I tell you, there is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents." Uh oh! That repent word. Relax my friends, all it means is to stop, turn and go the other way. I'm not gonna say much more than this: It is a wonderful thing to know that God cares for me that he'd come to find what was "lost". Remember that joy you have when you find something that was lost, and amplifly that by a "ka-gillian" times and then some...and that's what happens in heaven when we trust God. Cool beans, eh? George & JJ - New Slideshow!

Hey everyone, thanks for checking in. The perpetual wheels of life are cruzin' along here at MSP, and I'm finally able to post a slideshow from one of my favorite weddings. Here it is - George and JJ's wedding from North Hollywood. (YES! I travel :) Both George and J.J. are such awesome people! I am honored to have been their photographer and share in their special day. The ceremony was held at First Christian Church in North Hollywood, and the reception was held at Anoush Ojakh. A beautiful ceremony, followed by a quick squeeze of some romantic images at the park, and off to the reception banquet...it was such a blast!! Wow, there was so much dancing, it was terrific. George & J.J. were announced and went directly into a first dance that embraced his Sirian heritage, that lasted for at least 20 minutes. It was truly a fantastic celebration, and I could feel the excitement, family support, and love. There's always a moment that I come away with from every wedding, and each one is different. This one was when the two were dancing alone later in the evening to "Everything" by Lifehouse (slideshow song). My heart was checked as I watched them get lost in each other. I guess I'm a sap, eh? :) Watch this thing twice...there's so many details involved! Oh, and the colors...wow!

The entire bridal party were a blast...I hope to see you all again soon. Thank you George and J.J.! Congratulations again...It was my honor.

Hi everyone. I'll be at Spirit West Coast for the next 5 days to keep tradition and visit my photographic roots. We'll have a booth at the Main Tent, and I'll probably be popping around the corners with my camera. :) If you're planning on attending, please, please stop by our setup and say hi. The Beautiful Wedding of Andy & Ashley!

Okay one of my all time favorite weddings, Andy & Ashley were an absolute blast to photograph. These two have such a beautiful love for each other! Both my wife and I were deeply touched just by watching them interact and am so honored to have been a part of their special day. I met Ashley and her family last year at Spirit West Coast here in Monterey, and looked forward for almost a year to shoot their wedding. They've known each other since high school, and what a love story to behold...
The handsome groom...All of the fun was held at the beautiful and dignified Sesnon House in Aptos. Two hours before this shot there was an incredible Lightning and Thunderstorm that was simply wicked, dark, and wet...only to unveil an incredibly beautiful day with blue skies and sunshine. Note the cool white clouds to add depth. It's amazing how the Lord hears our prayers! I think more than a few people were praying for sure...

A fun shot! The parents actually got vinyl stickers to customize the steps and grounds. Looked great!I so love shooting the "First Look" hours before the actual ceremony because it provides an environment where both the bride and groom can take time to reflect, get away from distractions and appreciate just the two of them, enjoy each other, and soak it up ! Here's Ashley coming from behind to present herself to her groom...Heart warming emotions included happiness, JOY!, excitement, fulfillment, bliss, & so much more that words just simply cannot describe. Yep, it's true...a picture is worth a thousand words! One of my ultimate favorite images of all time. This my friend, is what LOVE is about. My wife had to turn around behind me because this moment was sooo special and real, and almost made her cry. Ashley is overwhelmed with the joy of the moment, and Andy cannot believe his eyes! You know me, with my "deep, but not really deep" thinking. Years ago, even before I got married, I was touched by a man's testimony, based on Matthew 6:25-34. Verse 26 says "Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?" This guy was beaten down, tore up, had gone through the thick of it, was going to commit suicide, and ran across this verse. He simply asked God for a bird...that he "needed" a bird. Of course, this was symbolic, but God is so great! He remembered that prayer, and one afternoon during it all this bird came and landed right next to this man on his porch railing. To further push the experience, he put his hand out next to it, and yep, the bird stepped on his hand. Cool story. There was much more to it, but that's the jist of it. This whole passage (verses 25-34) is about worrying, and how we shouldn't. Instead we should trust God to provide and seek to know him more. Invest in the things that last! This is one of the "life verses" for me. So, 8 years ago (I remember it like it was yesterday), my new bride and I were on our honeymoon in Kauai having breakfast, and I randomly remembered that story. So I uttered a similar prayer, not hurting or in super need yet, but knowing that Gina and I both didn't have a whole lot to fall back on (but our love!:). During one of my favorite breakfasts with open dining (warm tropical breeze and what not), a bird perched right next to our booth and I was totally encouraged. Not realizing it, but over the course of the next 8 years I found myself being reminded many many times about the faithfulness of God, and I've never looked at birds the same. Sidebar: Funny thing is I used to love shooting them with my BB gun as a kid, but life has its twists! So, summing this up, I revisited that verse a few weeks back and was extremely refreshed one early morning at my home when I opened my front door to literally see this nest, with baby eggs and all! I couldn't find any words, but only found a freaking huge smile on my face. I don't want to preach, but God is extremely faithful, and no matter what He is always there for you! Have a terrific day!

New iPhone Announced (finally)

Apple finally announced the release date of the new version of iPhone, called the iPhone 3G. It's a little thinner than before, faster in data transmission, now has GPS & other optional applications, is available all black or white, and is a lot cheaper than for what I bought mine for! It will be available July 11 - sure to be a popular day at the Apple store! It kinda sounds like I'm a salesman for Apple, doesn't it? :) In all seriousness, those of you who have seen me share my iPhone and Macs know how excited I get about the coolest technology - they just work great! I am almost ALL Mac, and hopefully will be transitioned by the end of the summer with a whole new office system that is way beyond fluid, and works the way that I need it to. If you have yet to play with a Mac, swing by the store while shopping one day and have a blast. It doesn't take much to learn something new, just a little time and willingness. Shoot, swing by my office (if I'm here) and I'll let you play a little with my stuff! Another reason to drop in and say hi. :) I hope you're Monday is going wonderful! Hey everyone, I've got enough time for a quickie post. I just returned from a fabulous but quick trip up to Idaho for Rachel and Ryan's wedding. I am humbled by the sheer beauty of the day and how it turned out. It started raining and continued for most of the day, only to stop, clear up wonderfully before the ceremony, and finish off with a glorious display of God's handiwork! And of course, the sky was pretty too! :) Marriage is so freaking cool, I absolutely love my job. Hello all! I hope you had a wonderful weekend this past memorial day! It's such an awesome privilege to live in this country with such freedom! Freedom to live our lives and pursue our dreams, to worship God freely with no fear, and to raise a family with all the opportunities afforded us by those who went before us in pursuit of a dream. Thank God for them.

We're just about off to Idaho for a destination wedding, but wanted to post a quickie and introduce you to Natalie and Gavin. We strolled the streets of downtown Carmel-By-The-Sea, tearing up Ocean street and beyond. One thing about living on the Monterey Peninsula is the ever-present summer "fog" or overcast. Some days are extremely warm and sunny, while others are cool and calm. The one good thing about overcast is the huge softbox it creates naturally for my subjects. Either way, no matter the weather, it always comes down to the people. I am blessed to have such great clients! And I am stoked to photograph two people who are truly in love. That's what shines the most, whether it's sunny or not. :) So, again, here are Natalie & Gavin. They're getting married at the gorgeous Quail Lodge in Carmel Valley this summer!

Well, these two have been married for over a year now, and really wanted some GREAT images of the two of them together. So with a beautiful afternoon a few weeks ago we conquered Oldtown Monterey and the Monterey Harbor. Nick really likes boats and will eventually take me sailing I'm sure :), so I weaseled my way into the locked docks with just a gentle request to a boat owner...who actually invited us to use her boat! Such cool people here! There's nothing wrong with asking...nicely.

A Picture Week

Okay, I'm feeling a picture posting week coming on. I so need to update this blog with current images! Habits can be hard to make sometimes. :) So, to begin the week, here of course is the latest pic of my pride and joy boy! He just had his second birthday recently and was so excited to get a present in the mail from Auntie Nikki. More bubbles, yay.
I've been entertaining the idea of getting a family dog for a long time, but wanted to wait for the right timing with my son. So, I probably jumped the gun as JK is only 2, but what the heck. Meet COOPER, our Puggle. Literally half PUG, half BEAGLE...he's what they call a designer breed and is such fun! He's 8 months old, and full grown. Just the right size for us. Selfishly, I like the fact that having a dog is a good kick in the pants to have somewhat of a regular schedule...and my wife like the fact that I'm trying to get home at a relatively decent hour for dinner. (After all, I'm still an artist and have to accomplish so much in one day!) I'm learning that fun word called Balance. So, more images to come, and a lot of my current and past clients! Out of focus?

Hey all, how about another kinda deep thought? It popped in my brain this afternoon after my follow up visit to the eye doctor. I got my eyes dialated today & it screwed up my ability to work on the computer vision wise, so I got to thinking. I can see far away clearly with no problem, but my vision right in front of me is foggy & blurry. I am confident about the things that I see, its just that they're not sharp & in focus. The details are unknown. So the application: I see clearly where we are going and where we want to go, but sometimes the details of how to get there & understanding of it all isn't so clear. But that's ok! The journey is great the people are wonderful. God is amazing. My encouragement to you is to keep pushing through the fog and it will eventually become clear. No telling how long it will take sometimes but perseverance is so critical. Don't give up. You're not alone! :)

This analogy is just the tip of the iceberg on how wide this could be & how deep you want to go with it, & how it specifically applies to your life. As always, I encourage you to run with it and make it your own...apply your journey & thoughts! And don't forget to enjoy the ride.

"What Are You Chasing?"

I ran across this post on a forum last week, and thought it great to share. I don't know where it originally came from, but go ahead and read it. It's well to the point. Where do you stand on the American Dream?

Here it is:

An American investment banker was walking by the pier of a coastal Mexican village when a fisherman docked his small boat nearby and tossed several large yellow fin tuna onto the dock.

The American complimented the Mexican on the quality of his fish and asked, "How long does it take to catch them?"

The Mexican replied: "Not very long, maybe a couple of hours, senor."

The American then asked why the fisherman didn't stay out longer and catch more fish.

The Mexican said he had enough to support his family's immediate needs and was happy with that.

The American then asked, "But what do you do with the rest of your time?"

The Mexican fisherman said, "I sleep late, fish a little, play with my children, take siesta with my wife, Maria, stroll into the village each evening where I sip wine and play guitar with my friends. I have a full and busy life which I enjoy very much."

The American rolled his eys and said, "I'm a Harvard MBA and could help you. Here's what you should do: Spend more time fishing. You get more money, and with that, you buy a bigger boat. Then you can catch more fish, and buy an even bigger boat. If you work hard, then soon you would have a fleet of fishing boats. Instead of selling your catch to a middleman you would sell directly to the processor. If that works out, then you open your own cannery. At that point you would control the product, the processing and the distribution. And, you could leave this little town and move to Mexico City, or LA and or even New York City. From there you could run the whole thing by phone, Fedex and the Internet."

The Mexican fisherman thinks this over for a minute and then asks, "Interesting. How long will this all take?"

The American thought for a little bit, took out his calculator and punched in some numbers, and then announced "I think you do this in only 15-20 years."

"But what then?"

The American laughed and said, "Here's the beauty of the whole thing. When the time is right you announce an IPO and sell your company stock to the public and become very rich. You could make millions!"

The Mexican thought this over for a little longer, staring out to sea and thinking about what millions would buy. He asked, "Okay. Millions.. then what?"

The American said, "This is the best part ~ you would retire. Move to a small coastal fishing village where you would sleep late, fish a little, play with your kids, take siesta with your wife, stroll to the village in the evenings where you could sip wine and play your guitar with your friends."

I know, I know...another post about my wonderful boy. So, to keep it short, I'll only say that HE arranged this in the hall. How cool is the responsibility of having someone follow in my shoes! :)

On another note, I desperately need the internet at my house. Country living is like a mini retreat everyday, but it has its drawbacks. If it weren't for my iPhone I'd be lost! It's days like today that I could be a bit more productive with a home office, but the advantages definately outway the disadvantages. I hope your day was great!

The Photoshop thang...

Hey, before I run, I wanted to say something real briefly about Photoshop. I have never ran across a more robust piece of software! I am loving learning how to do great things with it. It is such a great tool, but should remain just that: A tool. Way too many photographers are "praying and spraying" (old law enforcement term) and relying heavily on fixing the images afterwards in PS. Although there's a time and a place for it, I don't think PS should be treated like that. Maybe I'm off a little, and maybe I won't achieve those same looks all of the time, but I want the images that I shoot to be timeless, and fun to look back on 50 years from now without it looking like an obvious trend of the times. My mindset is that the image should not only look fantastic, but equally important should bring you back to that time. (More later...) The effects are fun, and look wonderful. But I have chosen to only pick a handful of images to put the MSP/PS touch on, and remain on the path to produce quality images of art that are natural. Now...that said, I do know how to have fun, and today I played around (a little way too much!), but check out this cool pic. I think it always comes down to, as with so many things, that fun word called "balance". Just my two very quick cents...Have fun.

I couldn't wait for it, so I've just changed some basic stuff here. Although not bad, I must confess, I am eager to get the new groove on. In the coming months I'm sure you'll be taken back on how refined the new look will be. So there, the cat's out of the bag. (Well, more like his tail. :)

hey all, I'm scrambling this week to tie up a bunch of loose ends and amp up for the busy wedding season that's upon us, but I ran across this pic of my little guy at the beach about 2 weeks ago. It was around 80 degrees (awesome!) here in Monterey, so we grabbed an hour or so before a shoot I had and splashed around at the beach. Funny enough, my iPhone (the best invention of all time) got some really great shots, but this one was from the point and shoot. Anyhow, I wish you all a fantastic day! Take a breathe of fresh air, and remember that you hold tremendous value.

Time flys or flies...

Wow, this past week seemed to fly by - Between sorting and editing images in Apple's Aperture 2.0, getting more familiar with my album designs, meeting clients and babysitting, it's been a full one indeed. More PICTURE posts to come next week! Stay tuned. :) In the meantime, check out these killer shots taken of Fisherman's Wharf at 8pm after a lifestyle shoot last weekend. I bumped up the sharpness, contrast and color saturation in camera to produce a bit of a different "surreal feel" to the images. It was such a beautiful day (but I'll tell you more about it with Jeni & Nick's picture post).

And then there's this picture taken of a monkey in a tree in Hollywood by my friend/associate photographer extraordinaire Joshua Cloud. Funny looking monkey, don't ya think? Josh did such a wonderful job shooting with me. More to come on that note as well...

If you're into biking (as in the physical exercise, sweat & natural adrenalin rush type of thing..as opposed to my style of biking where I physically exercise my wrist turning the throttle and ankles shifting gears!), the annual Sea Otter Classic is going on throughout this weekend at Laguna Seca/Mazda Raceway. Called the Bikestock of North America, this massive cycling event features fun rides, road racing, mountain bike racing, BMX racing, kids events, and a consumer trade show that highlights the latest in cycling stuff. Racers range from first timers to Olympic champions. Watch out for that traffic, and have a great weekend!

The flowers over my back door are telling me by their fragrance that
spring is upon us! (and to give them a haircut-hehe) Yay! I love this
time of year...the newness & freshness of it all, plus the beautiful
weddings I get to witness. Everytime I walk out the door this week,
and the aroma of the wisteria flowers hits me, I will pause and be
grateful for the air I breathe & how each day is a new day to live to
the fullest! "His mercies are new every morning." What are you going
to be thankful for this week?

I am still sorting & editing George & J.J.'s wedding from Hollywood, but couldn't help but share at least ONE image right away. So George & J.J., here you go! Of course, you're probably soaking up the sun on a tropical beach somewhere, drinking delicious margaritas and wishing you took your photographer along for those beautiful romantic sunsets, right? hahaha!

Today has been a repeat of the last few days, catching up on emails, downloading/editing/sorting images, and trying to catch and extinguish that little office-closet-monster who keeps messing up my entire space with garbage, junkmail, and miscellaneous papers, empty starbucks cups, candy boxes, and everything else. One day, I will nab that little sucker. Mark my words. :)

I am so eager to post some recent images...so be on the lookout and check back often! Thanks so much for taking the time to hang out here.

On a personal note, I am so blessed to wake up each and every morning next to my high school sweetheart, and my little red headed 2 year old, who somehow through the night, has ended up with his two little beautiful feet resting on my head. The coolest thing in the world, really, is to open my eyes and find JK looking at my face saying "Daddee, Daddee..." and taking out his binkie to give me a good morning kiss. ABSOLUTELY PRICELESS. Nothing else to say. Wow.

Of course, by now you know that there are three major aspects of my life: The Lord & his love for us, my treasured wife & son, and my wonderful clients/friends. You guys make my life full and rich, and I am so thankful for you. No fluff here, just the hardcore truth. Thank you for allowing me to share my life with you. Yay!

So now for a question of the day (when posted): What is your favorite coffee shop, and why? You may not already know this, but one of my aspirations is to open my own coffee house, withmy studio next door. But not just another coffee shop just to have one. (It seems they keep popping up everywhere!) Why do those who open one actually open one? What's their motivation? Hmmm...maybe I'm pondering too much on this, so I digress. The vision for mine is one that, in order to fully appreciate, has to be explained in person with my enthusiasm, excitement, and passion. If you're in town, call me. I'd be happy to explain.

I have to run and move my car before I get another parking ticket here in Monterey. Happy Thursday!!!

We finished late last night with George & J.J.'s wonderful wedding here in North Hollywood. What an event! The whole reception was a BIG dance of honor and celebration with family and friends, and food no-stop. I think there were 5 entrees courses brought out on huge platters throughout the entire evening late into the night. The music was incredible with an arabic band, and a DJ to fill in the gaps. I'll post more details when we return. We drive home today, and will post some images in the coming days. Happy Sunday to you! Enjoy your family.

Hey all, we are heading out to North hollywood bright and early tomorrow morning to shoot George & J.J.'s wedding on Saturday. These guys are such a blast to work with, and I am excited about their special day! Here's their picture from a previous post.

Yes another iPhone photo...we decided to spend the afternoon together
walking the property and holding hands (when JK wasn't pushing the
tricycle around). As you know already, I am kind of obsessed with my
son. :) what a splendid day yesterday was- nice and warm. Then the
weather today reminds me that its not spring just yet! Either way I'll
take the sunshine, and the priceless walks. I think I have my son to
partially blame for my passion to capture real life moments.
